TAKE A TOUR OF HOWE CAVERNS

 

Technical Tour 4/26/2018 – Blenheim-Gilboa Power Plant – cost $30

Tour Summary:

Large-scale electricity storage will be a critical part of a clean energy future. But long before engineers sought to store power from intermittent energy sources such as wind or solar, the NY Power Authority was already a leader in energy storage. Take a tour of the Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project, which uses hydroelectric technology and two large reservoirs at different altitudes to generate up to 1,160,000 kilowatts of electricity. The plant uses power to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir. Then it generates power as the water descends through the project’s turbine-generators to create electricity, making it like a giant rechargeable battery.  The facility provides power to the grid at moments of peak demand and then recharges, restoring itself to readiness when demand and power prices are low. The tour will show the various levels of the plant and generation system at different levels. Each floor houses a different portion of the turbine/generators and you will get a view of each floor from the spherical valve to the top part of the unit.

 

Tours are not typically given of the plant, but NYSATE was granted special permission. Tour guests will need to bring a hard hat and safety glasses to wear.  Footwear should preferably be work boots, and no open-toed shoes will be allowed.  Photo ID will also be required for all attendees, since the plant is a secure facility.

 

Itinerary for April 26th:

09:30 – bus departs from Otesaga Hotel

11:00 – arrive at Visitor Center for ID check – 1378 State Route 30 North, Blenheim, NY

11:10-11:15 – bus travels to plant

11:15-12:15 – tour of plant

12:15-13:15 – light box lunch provided at plant

13:15 – depart

14:45 – bus returns to Otesaga Hotel
