NYSATE Section 11 - Engineer of the Year

Harry's PictureIt is with great honor and pleasure that we introduce Main Office - Section 11''s Engineer of the Year for 2010 - Harry J. Bartik. Harry has been an Active NYSATE Member for more than 50 years while working for two different State Agencies. Harry started a 37 year career with DOT in 1959, retiring from the department in 1995. He has worked the past nine years for the State's Emergency Management Office, otherwise known as SEMO. Harry has been a very active and dedicated member in Section 11, serving as a Local Director for more than 25 years was our Parliamentarian for several years. Harry held the position of Section 11 Vice President for two terms and Section 11 President up to his retirement in 1995. Since retiring, Harry has been Section 11's Director for Life Members, responsible for keeping in contact with all 50 or more of our Section's active Life Members who regularly attend our functions.

Harry has attended more than 40 Conferences and has worked on committees for THREE Section 11 Conferences; most recently as Co-Chair of our Hospitality Room Committee for this year's Conference 70. Harry regularly attends all Section 11 dinner meetings, Local Board Meetings and is a key participant in all our member functions including our Holiday Party and Annual Summer Picnic were he is one of our "grill masters". Harry personally helps fund one of Section 11's Annual Scholarships - The David Barkevich Memorial Scholarship to which he contributes $250 each year.

Harry has been involved with the Rotterdam and Woestina Little Leagues; volunteers as a certified junior bowling coach / instructor for the American Bowling Congress and was a Webelo Leader for the Boy Scouts of America. Harry was one of the charter members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Rotterdam Aerie 3610. He served as Chaplain and was involved with their fund raising and the Rotterdam Sesquicentennial Celebration. Harry is also a member of The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks in which he is deeply committed to the Elks' Veteran Administration Hospital Visitation program. While working for DOT, Harry was a member of "Operation Lifesaver" a national grade crossing safety organization which promotes grade crossing safety and awareness and gave educational seminars at schools across the State. Harry was a certified judge for New York Association of Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) at the annual and nationally well known School Bus Rodeo's for many years.

Harry's second love is his addiction to motor sports and is an avid "motor head." Harry owns a 1982 Delorean DMC-12, a 1971 Volvo P1800E and restored a 1960 Triumph TR - 3A. Harry has attended races at the Watkins Glen International Raceway, Lime Rock Park and the Daytona International Speedway for nearly 40 years.

On a more personal note, Harry's first love is his wife Candida. They have two son's Matthew and Timothy. Harry has two sons, David and Stephen and a daughter Lori from a previous marriage. Harry also has six grandchildren and will soon have a great-grandchild.

In closing, Section 11 is very proud and fortunate to have such a dedicated, committed member and Engineer of the Year as Harry J. Bartik. Harry is a finalist for the 2010 Statewide Engineer of the Year.
